Global Conference for Media Freedom

The Brief

In line with the Government’s manifesto and to shine a global spotlight on media freedom and increase the cost to those that are attempting to restrict it, Identity was appointed by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to deliver the inaugural Global Conference for Media Freedom, a first of its kind, international event, co-hosted by Jeremy Hunt, the UK Foreign Secretary, Chrystia Freeland, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy Amal Clooney.

The event took place on the 10th and 11th July 2019, and over 1,500 international delegates attended the landmark two-day conference including global leaders, government officials, multilateral agencies, civil society organisations, academics, editors, publishers, journalists, high-profile, protected individuals and other VVIPs.

Due to the profile of delegates attending, security at the event was critical. Identity collaborated with the Metropolitan Police to ensure all appropriate safety and security measures were undertaken and implemented robust protocols to guarantee delegate confidentiality.

Deliverables & Highlights

The conference was held at Printworks, London, the first event of its kind to occupy the industrial space which provided an excellent canvas for Identity to create an innovative and immersive environment to represent the event themes and messages. Identity delivered innovative solutions including a 360-degree multi-media experience, projection mapping, large format graphics and LED lighting to create an integrated experience, which ensured the audience were fully immersed in the theme and which also highlighted the key topics and challenges related to media freedom.

Identity also provided media and host broadcast services including filming of arrivals, the press conference and plenary sessions. To support the broadcast delivery, a state of the art Outside Broadcast Unit provided the mainstay of the operation. Identity created a dedicated media filing space equipped with workstations, power, fast internet and branding to allow media to file quickly.

The Results

The Global Conference for Media Freedom was an impeccably delivered event that took place in a sizeable and challenging venue. Identity had just nine weeks to plan, design, build and execute this major event, which required effective planning to manage and produce the conference efficiently and within budget.

“Thanks to the sterling efforts by you and the team, Printworks really did look stunning. As well as having a great vibe and lots of creativity, it was also comfortable enough in the right places for the visiting Ministers and other delegates. I particularly appreciated how you made last minute changes including the set-up of the VIP green rooms, session configurations and PA announcements, as well as helping us manage expectations of our Canadian partners and our VIP speakers brilliantly. I was delighted with the result.” – Deputy Director of the Multilateral Policy Directorate, Campaign for Media Freedom
