You Raise Me Up is a charity close to many people’s hearts in the local area. Based in Polegate, they provide much needed emotional and financial support to families who have sadly lost young adults between the ages of 16-25. When I was introduced to the Events Organiser of You Raise Me Up at a networking event, I not only found out about the amazing things this charity does but also was told I could help by taking part in a tandem skydive. At the time of putting my name down, the date for the jump felt so far away, the realisation of what I had just signed up to do hadn’t set in – I was just excited!
I set off and created my very own sponsor page to reach my target of £500. By sharing this around family, friends and colleagues I was soon well on my way to reaching my goal – it was such good feeling when donations came through.
The day of the skydive soon came around, myself and 13 other brave souls boarded the coach, along with an army of supporters to Salisbury, where we would soon be hurtling towards the ground at 125mph. Sadly on our journey we were informed that it was in fact too windy to skydive on that day. We rescheduled for the following week and saw this as an opportunity to raise more funds rather than a setback. So we tried again, this time successful – it was a glorious day, perfect for falling through the sky!
I chose to fall from 15,000 feet (the highest you can go in the UK), the plane ride up was surreal and thrilling. Knowing you are about to leave a plane through a small exit at the back and free fall/parachute back down to terra firma is a thought that not often crosses my mind. I was first to leave the plane and was surprisingly calm, the pre-skydive training was going through my mind and before I knew it I was in the air. The feeling of free fall can only be described as floating – but with a lot of air blowing in your face! Although I was enjoying the minute long free fall, I couldn’t help but feel relieved when my skydive instructor deployed the parachute. Minutes after I was back on the ground wishing I could go again.
In total us skydivers managed to raise over £10k for You Raise Me Up – what an achievement! I am very proud to have taken part and raised funds for such a worthy cause.
